The summer is not far away and it’s time to make a list of films to see. We all hope for a fabulous ‘outdoors only’ kind of weather and if we are to stay ‘indoors’, it should better be worth it.
Of course a true film geek won’t be staying away from cinemas because of fabulous weather but thinking of worthwhile films can be useful.
Being a legitimate film geek, I don’t just select films for watching based on the trailers. I might be not that interested in the film itself, but have a soft spot for certain directors, actors, film scores, costume designers and being excited to see their work.
I always had a special interest in film production as a whole and having a privilege to work on some Hollywood feature films, my love and passion for various aspects of filmmaking only deepened. When you make it your business to watch around 200 films per year, you tend to learn how to find something good even in mediocre or bad films- you can still learn from mistakes, right?!
Ever since I was a kid I developed a special love for film scores, which are often responsible for dragging me to the cinema to see some seriously bad films. It’s fascinating how film music can elevate even the most hopeless film. Most recently I had a pleasure to attend Brian Tyler’s concert in London and some themes he played made me think ”this film does not deserve this score”. Even if the film fails to impress you, there is still a chance you might leave the cinema discovering something new or enjoying some parts of the film.
Other thing i’m considering is cinematography. All of my favourite DOPs have different styles. It’s quite fascinating to watch the results of their effort on screen whether they used classical or innovative approach.
And of course there are also costumes. Costumes are such a big part of who the character is and I cannot help but be fascinated by the work of some costume designers.
